Abstract
319,101. Plauson, H. July 25, 1928. Emulsions, making. - Aqueous emulsions of natural or artificial bitumen or tar or mixtures of such materials are prepared by adding them in molten condition to an emulsion of animal or vegetable oil or fat, such as palm-oil, bonegrease, butter, lard or wool grease, in an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium carbonate to which calcium hydroxide has previously been added. A water-soluble organic liquid such as aniline, furfural, glycerine or glycerine crude liquors from fat-splitting processes may be incorporated in the mixture either by addition to the bitumen or by addition in the form of a water suspension to the oil or fat emuslion before the bitumen is added. The calcium hydroxide also may be added to the otherwise completed bituminous emulsion. The products are stable liquids or pastes and may contain up to 90 per cent of bitumen. They may be diluted with water or with hot or cold 1 to 3 per cent potassium carbonate solution and in this or in undiluted form may be spread or sprayed effectively both on wet and dry roads. Examples of the invention are as follow : (1) A mixture of 10 parts of petroleum asphalt and 1-10 per cent of aniline at 110-130‹ C. are added to an emulsion of 0.5-2 parts of palmkernel oil or bone grease in 35 parts of 3-6 per cent potassium carbonate solution at 70-80‹ C. into which 0.3-1 parts of calcium hydroxide has been stirred; the mixture is stirred vigorously or passed through a colloid mill to form a 60 per cent bitumen emulsion resistant to vibration and the action of air, carbon dioxide and frost. (2) A molten mixture of 85-90 parts asphalt and 5-10 parts aniline or furfural are added to a hot emulsion containing 3-5 parts sodium or potassium carbonate, 1-2 parts lard and 0.1-1 parts calcium hydroxide; the mixture is pumped several times from one vessel to another and is then allowed to set to a solid paste which may be liquefied at 35-50‹ C., sprayed at 70-100‹ C. or diluted with water or 1-2 per cent potassium carbonate.
