Abstract
333,153. Fox, C. G. Feb. 4, 1929. Emulsions, making. - Bituminous emulsions are prepared by the use as emulsifying agents of the products obtained by treating liquid marine animal waxes or fats containing esters of monhydric aliphatic alcohols with sulphuric or phosphoric acid. Examples of the preparation of such products are as follow (1) To 100 kgs. of sperm oil are added 20 kgs. of concentrated sulphuric acid with cooling. The mass after standing is washed with water at 70‹ C. and then with saturated common salt or Glaubers salt solution and is neutralized or made alkaline with soda or caustic soda solution. (2) Sperm oil is treated with 15 per cent of phosphoric anhydride which dissolves therein and is then treated as in (1). To make an emulsion one part of the product of (1) or (2) is dissolved in 50 parts of water containing <1>/10 part of 40 per cent caustic soda solution and mixed with 50 parts of liquid or liquefied bitumen at 95‹ C. The Provisional Specification refers to the treatment of the waxes or fats with dehydrating substances in general and describes the emulsification of 60 parts of carbon tetrachloride with 40 parts of water containing one part of the product of such treatment.
