Abstract
333,303. Parker, J. May 14, 1929. Emulsions, making.-Aqueous emulsions of coal-tar oils, creosote, petroleum oils, tar, pitch bitumen, asphalt or mixtures of these substances are prepared by agitating a mixture of casein, rosin, caustic soda or potash and water at 98- 100 C. until complete saponification is affected, cooling to 95 C., adding crude coal-tar naphtha with continued heating at the same temperature under a reflux condenser, and finally adding the principal ingredient, rendered fluid at a temperature as close as possible to that of the mixture, the latter temperature being maintained by the use of steam coils or by jacketing the mixing vessel. The naphtha may be replaced by creosote, the reflux condenser then being optionally used. An example gives the proportions employable as : casein 1-3 parts, rosin 1-3 parts, caustic soda 0.15-0.45 parts, water 30-60 parts, naphtha 5-10 part. To the above mixture may be added 60-120 parts of (1) fluid coal-tar or pitch, (2) a mixture of pitch and tar, (3) a mixture of pitch and coal-tar oils, or (4) bitumen or a mixture of bitumen with coal-tar oils or animal, vegetable or mineral oils. Specifications 221,380, 222,602, and 252,449 are referred to.
