Abstract

Mixed dispersions of paraffins with resins derived from steam cracked petroleum fractions are prepared by mixing the resin with the paraffin at a temperature above the softening point of the resin/paraffin mixture, a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid containing material added, the mixture cooled and a base then added to form with the acid an anionic emulsifier, followed by the gradual addition of water with agitation until the resulting emulsion changes from water in oil emulsion to an oil in water emulsion. The petroleum resins are those obtained by polymerisation in the presence of Friedel-Craft catalysts of steam cracked petroleum distillates boiling in the range 300 to 280 DEG C. and contain a ratio of olefins to diolefins sufficient to give a resin. The paraffin is one obtained by dewaxing a heaving petroleum oil distillate of melting point 48 to 54 DEG C. or crude or refined petroleum wax or petroleum jelly. The emulsifiering the potassium or sodium oleate, or a soap formed by the reaction of potassium or sodium hydroxide with colophony or a potassium or sodium soap of a vegetable fatty acid together with an amine.
