Abstract

Petroleum oils are deasphalted by contacting a fluid mixture of asphalt and oil with a deasphalting agent containing at least 60 per cent. by volume of propane, the remainder being one or more hydrocarbons having more than 4 carbon atoms, and separating the coagulated asphalt. A minimum temperature of 165 DEG F. when producing oils of Conradson carbon residues below about 3 and of 110 DEG F. when higher carbon residues are desired, is used. Hydrocarbons specified having more than 4 carbon atoms are aliphatic, including paraffinic and olefinic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons; examples given are benzene, hexane, heptane, isoheptane, isooctane, petroleum ether and a mixture of hydrocarbons boiling up to 230 DEG F.
