Abstract

Lubricating and transformer oils are obtained by polymerizing unsaturated hydrocarbons obtained by: (1) liquid-phase cracking of such materials as paraffin wax, ozokerite, ceresine, wax-tailings, paraffinous shale, and paraffinous distillates and residues from brown coal tar, to obtain mainly a product of B.P. 150--450 DEG C.; (2) refining this fraction, e.g. by chemical agents, adsorbents, or selective solvents such as liquid sulphur dioxide, nitrobenzol, furfurol, or mixtures; (3) cracking the refined product in the vapour phase, followed or not by refining, preferably by aluminium chloride at elevated temperature, to remove diolefines. For example, 1000 kg. of topped paraffinous Roumanian crude oil is cracked in the liquid phase at 450 DEG C. and 44 atmospheres with reflux above 400 DEG C., and the 810 kg. fraction of B.P. 200--400 DEG C. is treated with liquid sulphur dioxide; the 690 kg. of raffinate is cracked in the vapour phase at 580 DEG C. and atmos. pressure, yielding 420 gm. of suitable unsaturated oil which is polymerized with the aid of aluminium chloride; in addition to 300 kg. of first class lubricating oil there is obtained a Diesel oil and a spindle oil.
