Abstract
The conversion of acetylene into higher boiling hydrocarbon products is effected in the presence of an indifferent liquid medium such as liquid paraffin, transformer oil, decahydronaphthalene and tetrahydronaphthalene. The acetylene may be mixed with other unsaturated hydrocarbon gases such as ethylene, and the acetylene may be formed in the indifferent liquid medium. A catalyst such as finely divided iron or magnesium bromide may be used. In an example calcium carbide and water (in glass) are introduced into decahydronaphthalene in an autoclave and the mixture heated with stirring to 440 DEG C., giving liquid products of boiling range between 60 DEG and 230 DEG C. In another example ethylene is introduced after closing the autoclave, the products obtained in this case have a high content of low-boiling unsaturated hydrocarbons.
