Abstract

Solid carbonaceous materials are destructively hydrogenated in presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of sodium or potassium with a metal radicle, e.g. sodium aluminate. The destructive hydrogenation is carried out at temperatures of about 420 DEG C., and under 100 kgs. pressure or less. Coal is crushed and made into a paste with anthracenic oil boiling above 250 DEG C. Sodium aluminate is added and the paste is heated in presence of hydrogen to 400 DEG C., in a pipe still or digester fitted with an agitator, a pressure of 100 kgs. being maintained. 1 cubic metre or less of hydrogen is used per kilogram of paste treated.
