Abstract

In the liquid phase treatment of distillable carbonaceous materials with hydrogenating gases at elevated pressures and at temperatures above 300 DEG C., the temperature of the materials in the hydrogenation converter is regulated by withdrawing materials from the converter or the hot catchpot, cooling them to the required extent, and recycling them to the converter without substantial release of pressure. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out in presence of catalysts which may be supported on carriers. The degree of cooling effected may be controlled by varying the amount of the liquid recycled and/or the temperature to which it is cooled. Ground coal is pasted with an equal amount of heavy oil obtained from a previous similar operation. The paste mixed with 2 per cent iron sulphide is heated with 1,5 cubic metres of hydrogen per kilogram of paste in a preheater to 450 DEG C. under 600 atmos. pressure and passed into a converter vessel maintained at 475 DEG C. The products obtained are passed into an adjacent catchpot from which heavy liquid products are withdrawn, cooled to 250 DEG C., and recycled to the converter in the proportion of one kilogram of liquid product per kilogram coal introduced. Specifications 392,631 and 476,744 are referred to.
