Abstract
1,270,074. Thermal cracking. MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG. CO. Ltd. 17 June, 1970 [21 June, 1969], No. 29317/70. Heading C5E. Hydrocarbons are thermally cracked to produce olefins such as ethylene by introducing the feed, optionally with a diluent such as steam, into a reaction tube in a furnace, through which tube is circulated molten metal the hydrocarbons thereby being cracked with the formation of coke in the reaction tube; introducing the molten metal with the reaction products and coke into a quenching tower containing molten metal, the coke forming a layer which is run off and the gaseous products passed to an outlet; and recycling the molten metal from the foot of the tower back to the furnace to be preheated and then to the reaction tube. The molten metal emerging from the reaction tube or 700-1000‹ C. may be quenched to 300-500‹ C.
