Abstract

1489662 Cracking polyethylene and polypropylene UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 Aug 1975 [20 Aug 1974] 34447/75 Heading C5E Polyethylene or polypropylene are cracked to yield the respective monomer by a process comprising: (a) converting the polyethylene or polypropylene into liquid droplets or fluidized particles, (b) mixing the polymer in a cracking zone with 1 to 8 parts by wt. of hot gas so as to heat the polymer to 800-1050‹ C., the residence time in the cracking zone being 10-100 milliseconds and (c) quenching and recovering the monomer. The hot gas may be steam and/or a mixture of gases derived from the combustion of H 2 and O 2 . The pressure in the cracking zone may be 5-30 p.s.i.g.
