Abstract

Coal oil mixtures are destructively hydrogenated at temperatures above 300 DEG C. and pressures about 10 atmospheres while the coal is subjected to intensive attrition e.g. as described in Specification 281,240, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], catalysts may be used such as zinc or iron balls or grinding bodies. Small pea coal is preferably used dispersed in an oily medium. The hydrogen may be replaced by water gas etc. The coal and oil mixture fed forward by a conveyer 1 is mixed with hydrogen supplied through a heater 6 in a pipe 4 through <PICT:0402846/III/1> which the materials pass to a grinding mill 5 enclosed in a jacket 11 heated by molten metal or steam. Excess gas is removed through a filter 8 and the liquid fuel through a pipe 10. Specifications 18232/14 and 148,436, [both in Class 91, Oils &c.], also are referred to.
