Abstract

Hydrocarbons free from phenols and suitable for use as fuel for internal-combustion engines are obtained by subjecting a mixture of a mineral oil with creosote oil, tar acids or coal distillation products containing tar acids, in finely divided condition and with or without the addition of steam or residual gases of the process, to extensive surface contact with catalysts at a temperature of from 350-650 DEG C., and withdrawing the product as soon as it is free from phenols. The following catalysts are specified: iron, nickel, steel, copper, cobalt, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, tin, aluminium, alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, silicon, boron and alloys, mixtures or compounds thereof, pumice, firebrick, silica gel, porcelain, silica and electric furnace products such as carborundum, siloxicon, electric furnace treated carbon, alundum, carbides, nitrides, silicides, borides, alloys of iron and aluminium and mixtures and compounds thereof. When any of the catalysts employed are porous, the pores should be sealed with other catalysts. Any coal distillation product containing phenols derived from the heat treatment of coal of any grade from peat to anthracite may be used. The product obtained by distilling a mixture of powdered coal with the mineral oil and tar acids &c. is also suitable. In one example, a coal tar distillate freed from pitch, sulphur, &c. is mixed with mineral oil and passed at the rate of two gallons a minute through a long tube at 550 DEG C., which may be lined with copper. The vapours then pass into a catalytic chamber packed with small rings of copper. In a second example, a mixture of creosote oil freed from sulphur and arsenic, with a mineral oil is treated in the presence of steam according to the process of example 1. By employing suitable pressures cracking of the vapours may take place, but the high pressures such as are used in hydrogenation processes are not employed.
