Abstract
A petroleum hydrocarbon heavier than gasolene, for example gas oil, together with powdered coal is passed through a long (500 feet) pipe of small diameter (2 inches) heated to a temperature not exceeding 1100 DEG F., this temperature being controlled to give either low temperature distillates, light hydrocarbons, and benzol, or gas. Steam or inert gases may be introduced, or the liquid hydrocarbon may serve as a carrier. The coal is ground so that at least 85 per cent passes a 200 mesh sieve, but finer grinding is preferable. Atmospheric pressure may be used, but p 75-100 pounds per square inch hastens the operation. The powdered coal and hydrocarbons may be emulsified with water, preheated, and injected into the coil. Catalysts to assist the reaction are used to line the tube, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, tin, or ferrosilicon being suitable; or colloidal metals may be introduced into the coal-oil mixture.
