Abstract

<PICT:0386299/III/1> In the hydrogenation of oils or coal-oil mixtures, to obtain either low boiling-point compounds or lubricating oils, by passing the oils with hydrogen through a heating coil 9 and reaction drum 12, the products passing from the drum 12 through a pipe 18 are rapidly cooled to below 650 DEG F. before reaching heat exchangers 4, 4a, by admixture with cold condensate pumped from the separator 22 through pipes 24, 25. The products are then further cooled by passage through the heat exchangers 4, 4a, where they give up heat to the crude oil delivered by a pump 1 through a pipe 2 in which it is mixed with hydrogen from a pipe 3, the preheated oil then passing through a pipe 8 to the cracking coil, to which additional hydrogenating gases may be supplied from a pipe 8a. The cooled vapours are condensed in a coil 20 and separated from gaseous products in the separator 22, the gases being recirculated through a purifier 28, pump 29 and the pipe 8a. Temperatures of 850-1050 DEG F. or 750-830 DEG F. are maintained in the reaction zone according as to whether oils of low boiling-point or lubricating oils are required, the pressure being maintained above 20 atmospheres and preferably between 100-200 atmospheres. The drum 12 may be filled with catalytic materials supported on trays or packed in lumps.
