Abstract
Carbonaceous materials, particularly cycloparaffin oils, are hydrogenated with hydrogen under pressure preferably in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. manganese bronze, the temperature of the reaction being maintained below 20 DEG C. by the action of a cooling agent. Oil is admitted through a pipe 13 to an insulated reaction chamber 1 filled with manganese bronze wire. Hydrogen is pumped in through a valve 5 and a pipe 6 until the pressure reaches 25 atmospheres, the pressure being finally increased to 200 atmospheres by pumping in more oil through a valve 14. The chamber 1 is maintained at 15-20 DEG C. by passing brine through a cooling coil 7. After a period of three hours the products are pumped to a still heated to 300 DEG C. to distill off the light fractions or these may be obtained as described in Specification <PICT:0399487/III/1> 363,051. About 75 per cent of the oil is converted into a mobile spirit boiling at 35 DEG C.
