Abstract

An emulsion of a polyaromatic resin and a plasticizer therefor in water is made by completely fusing together the resin and the plasticizer, incorporating an anionic emulsifier into the plasticized resin in the fused condition and incorporating water into the mixture of emulsifier and plasticized resin until an emulsion of the plasticized resin in water is formed. Polyaromatic resins are the thermoplastic resins obtained by the distillation of tars resulting from the steam-cracking of petroleum fractions. The emulsifier may be added by mixing with the resin in the fused condition an organic acid which on saponification yields an anionic emulsifier and then incorporating into this mixture an aqueous alkali to saponify the acid. Specified plasticizers are mineral oils, oily polymers or copolymers of olefins or conjugated diolefins; polymers lighter than the resin itself but derived from the same tars or paraffin or crude or refined petroleum waxes.
