Abstract

In the separation of bitumen or mineral oil from rock or sand impregnated therewith, the sand &c. is treated with an aqueous solution of (1) substances promoting the formation of froth such as alkali soaps, turkey-red oil, saponin, or glue; (2) alkali salts or hydroxides; or (3) dilute acids; the bitumen or oil separates and rises to the surface or sinks to the bottom or forms an emulsion. The oil &c. is then separated by a washing process. Heat may be applied to render the oil or bitumen fluid, or a p solvent such as paraffin oil added.
