Abstract
Hydrocarbon lubricants are treated to recover the hydrocarbon compounds therein by agitating the lubricants with an aqueous solution containing ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and an alkali metal hydroxide, in amounts such that 2-4 molar weights of the alkali metal hydroxide are provided for each molar weight of the acid, and then separating the hydrocarbons from the aqueous solution. In one example, to 1 litre of used automobile oil is added 100 cc. of a 30 per cent solution of caustic soda and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid containing 2-3 molar weights of the hydroxide to each molar weight of the acid. The mixture is heated and when cool the two layers are separated. The bottom layer, containing sodium soaps, poly-metallic salts, complex compounds of the di-sodium salt of the tetra acid and suspended carbon particles, is filtered and the filtrate acidified to a pH of 4.5; the fatty acids are then separated from the water fraction, which is acidified to the isoelectric point of the tetra-amino acid. The upper hydrocarbon layer from the first separation is neutralized with caustic alikali, the soaps formed separated from the hydrocarbon compounds and acidified to obtain the fatty acids. In another example, automobile oil is treated with the di-sodium salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid but in this case the fatty acids are completely isolated in the hydrocarbon layer.
