Abstract

Liquid train oils composed largely of unsaturated alkyl esters are saturated by addition of hydroxyl groups. Bottle-nosed whale oil, sperm oil, and Physet oil, obtainable from marine mammals of the Physeter and Hyperoodon groups, may be saturated by mixing with concentrated sulphuric acid at a low temperature, allowing the mixture to stand, stirring into an excess of water, and heating with direct steam. Alternatively the conversion may be effected with permonosulphuric acid, hypochlorous acid, or by adding and subsequently splitting off halogen or hydrogen halide. The product is miscible both with water and fatty or mineral oils.ALSO:Fatty substances miscible both with water and with mineral and fatty oils, and useful in the leather industry as a substitute for Degras, are obtained from liquid train oils composed largely of unsaturated alkyl esters, by converting the latter into saturated esters by adding hydroxyl groups. Bottle-nosed whale oil, sperm oil and Physet oil, obtainable from marine mammals of the Physeter and Hyperoodon groups, may be converted by mixing with concentrated sulphuric acid at a low temperature, allowing the mixture to stand, stirring into excess of water, and heating with direct steam. Alternatively, the conversion may be effected with permonosulphuric acid or hypochlorus acid, or by adding and subsequently splitting off halogen or hydrogen halide. The product may be bleached, and may be diluted with fats, waxes, hydrocarbons, &c.
