Abstract

305,493. Moreton, C. J., and Prufix, Ltd. Aug. 5, 1927. Waterproofing; proofing-compositions. -A waterproofing solution for textile and other materials comprises gum Tragacanth, soap, animal, vegetable or mineral wax, and ammonia. The gum Tragacanth may be wholly or partly replaced by Indian gum, that is, the gum or gums obtained from Sterculia genera or allied genera, including Cochlospermum. Gossypium, and known as false Tragacanth, Hindu Tragacanth, Hog Tragacanth, Kalila, Kutira, Kietera, or Katirah. The material may be treated with an aqueous solution of a metal sulphate or acetate, such as titanium, zinc, or aluminium sulphate or aluminium acetate after treatment with the gum solution, and then dried by heat. Indian gum is soaked in water to produce a jelly like mass, which is then dissolved in ammonia solution. An emulsion is then made by boiling oleic acid soap and paraffin (melting at about 30‹ C.) in water, and passing through an emulsifier. This emulsion is mixed with the gum solution and water. The material to be proofed is soaked in the solution, preferably cold, wrung out or centrifuged, and passed through a solution of a metal sulphate or acetate such as aluminium acetate. In waterproofing paper, a slightly larger percentage of wax is used, the paper being passed between rollers in a trough containing the emulsion and then through, a calender. Dye may be added to the emulsion. Specification 262,605 is referred to.
