Abstract

891,731. Mixing solids and liquids. IMPACT MIXING CORPORATION. June 20, 1958 [June 4, 1957], No. 19915/58. Class 86. [Also in Group XII] Finely divided solids are mixed with a bituminous or other thermoplastic binder, e.g. in the manufacture of briquettes, the hot binding agent under pressure being first mixed with superheated water and then sprayed over the solid particles. Fine coal, after being dried and heated to about 200-205‹F., is fed into a chamber 1 in which blades 3 mounted on horizontal parallel shafts 2 rotated in opposing senses whirl the coal into a zone 4 of floating particles. Atomising nozzles 5 mix liquid pitch fed through a pipe 6 with superheated water fed through a conduit 7 provided with a check valve 8 and a cut-off valve 9. The pitch and water are mixed in equal proportions, the pitch being at a temperature of about 350‹F. and a pressure of 285 1b/in<SP>2</SP> and the water at the same temperature and a pressure of about 300 1b/in<SP>2</SP>. The mixture of water and pitch is sprayed through the nozzles in such a quantity that the briquette mix before pressing contains about 4% pitch and 4% water. The finished mix is discharged by opening a rotary gate 10 and during mixing the aggregate is kept at an elevated temperature by means of a heating jacket 11. The process may be used for briquetting metal ores or flooring materials. Specification 634,590 is referred to.
