616,857. Agglomerating fuel. JONES, W. I., JONES, D. C. R., and POWELL DUFFRYN, Ltd. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27614. [Class 50] Coal is briquetted without a binder by mixing and consolidating, e.g. into ribbon or pellet form, two or more portions of different size range of grain which have been freshly ground or kept under non-oxidizing conditions, the smallest range having a particle size of 20 microns and under ; heating the mixture to produce some softening without oxidation to not above 320‹ C., e.g. within the ranges 150 - 200‹ C., or 260 - 320‹ C., or to 100‹ C. or less and pressing. 65-70 per cent of 1/16 in. size grains of a semi-bituminous coal containing 12 per cent volatiles may be mixed with 35 - 30 per cent of a fine range (20 Á - o) of a bituminous coal of 25 per cent volatiles, wetted and pressed into pellets which are heated under non-oxidizing conditions to 170‹ C. and then briquetted in a double roll press at 2¢ tons per sq. in., the briquettes, which may be carbonized to produce a smokeless fuel, weighing about 50 gm. Minute quantities of hardening agents may be added to the powder ; for coals requiring a heat treatment of 100‹ C. or less caustic starch or sulphonated castor oil may be used.
