Description

Patented Dec. 20, 1932 omen ISIDOB ROSENWALD, OF PABKSVILLE, NEW YORK I i ooAL BRIQUETTE Io Drawing.
This invention relates to coal briquettes and the like products, and binders for making the same.
An object of this invention is to provide a coal briquette which shall be exceedingly cheap to manufacture and yet be thermally eflicient to a high degree from the standpoint of heat production, ease of kindling and burnin and the like factors.
Anot er object of the invention is to provide a coal briquette having the above properties, which shall also be waterproof and in which the coal particles are firmly held together by a binder of high adhesive properties, WhlCh prevents disintegration of the briquette, but nevertheless in no way interferes with or decreases the combustibility or other burning properties of the briquette.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel binder for use in making briquettes, such as coal from coal dust, which binder comprises exceedin y cheap and readily obtained raw materia 7 making possible the production, in an exceedingly simple 1 manner, and with great economy in time,
labor and other manufacturing costs, of highly eflicient briquettes with efiicient utilization of the coal dust.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part'hereinafter pointed out.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a binder for the coal dust made of very cheap and readily obtainable raw materials,
" and the operations required for producing the briquette are few and simply and easily carried out. I have found that ordinary cheese combined with chalk forms a binder which can be effectively used with the coal dust to form the same into briquettes. As an example of the carrying out of and an embodiment of my invention, I have found the following to give very good results:
I employ three grams of chalk and three grams of cheese per pound of coal dust. I
Application filed December 5, 1930. Serial No. 500,423.
make the binder up first by mixing the cheese and chalk in water to form a paste. I then combine this paste with the coal dust. The pressing or briquette forming operation can of course, be carried out in any suitable man- 56 ner, any form of mold sufiicing for the purpose. Thus, the mixture of binder and coal dust is placed into the mold and then compressed; The formed cake is then allowed to dry, rleaving the completed briquette. The cheese and chalk are obviously raw materials of the cheapest kind and may be very'easily obtained. I have found that such briquettes upon test give highly satlsfactory results with reference to B. t. u. content, 56
burning properties, and efficient utilization of the coal dust, and that the binder so effectively adheres the coal particles thereto that the briquette will not disintegrate or chip' or break in ordinary handling, or use, the 35 binder affording the desired adhesive properties without reducing the combustibility or other burning properties of the coal dust.
. It will thus be seen that there is provided a composition in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various 7 changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth is to be interpreted as illustrative and not' in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I g5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7 v V 1. A briquette comprising comminuted particles of fuel material held together by a V binder consisting of cheese and chalk.
g 2. A coal briquette comprising coal dust and a binder made of cheese and chalk mixed withwater.
3. A coal briquette comprising coal dust, cheese and chalk in the following propor- 2 1 1,s91,4uo
tions: three grams of cheese and three grams of chalk mixed With water, for each pound of coal dust.
A briquette comprisin particles of fuel material held t binder consisting of cheese.
5. A briquette comprising comminuted particles of fuel material held together by a binder consisting of equal portions of cheese and chalk.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
, ISIDOR ROSENWALD.
