Abstract

437,870. Materials for making coke. SOC. DE RECHERCHES ET DE PERFECTIONNEMENTS INDUSTRIELS, 87, Avenue du President-Wilson, Puteaux, Seine, France. March 27, 1935, No. 9504. Convention date, April 20, 1934. [Class 55 (ii)] Carbonized briquettes are made by mixing a small amount of finely powdered dry amylaceous binder with a larger amount of very fine coal powder having coking properties, mixing the product with anthracite or similar close burning fines, slightly heating and briquetting the mixture and finally baking the briquettes at about 560-650‹ C. If the fines have a humidity of 10 per cent or less drying is unnecessary. The mixture may be worked up at about 70-80‹ C. in apparatus heated by superheated steam and briquetted in a continuous rotary press, afterwards being distilled at 550-650‹ C. in an oven of the type employing a rapidly circulating gas in contact with the briquettes. In an example 1À8 parts of rice starch are mixed with 30 parts of powdered coking coal having 27 per cent of volatiles and 19 per cent of ash, this mixture being added to 68À2 parts of fines and the whole heated by superheated steam to 80-100‹ C. and pressed. The briquettes are baked for 50-60 minutes up to 600‹ C. Other amylaceous binders include the starch of rye, corn, maize, potato and chestnut. High volatile coals, bituminous, flaming, cannel, &c., which fuse on heating but do not yield a good coke may be used as the coking powder.
