Abstract

244,053. Crossman, F. M. Dec. 5, 1924, [Convention date]. Composition fuel briquettes of anthracite fines or other fuel material, preferably not having over 12 per cent of volatiles, contain a binding agent consisting of starch or other farinaceous material, sulphite celluose liquor, heavy oil residuum, and a small amount of sodium nitrate or other oxidizing agent. The nitrate is added to a milky solution of starch which is then heated so as to become a heavy flowing paste. The liquor and oil residues are added to the preferably boiling mixture, which is then thoroughly stirred. The fuel and binder are preferably mixed in vessels having heating means the moulded agglomerates being dried at from 250‹ to 400‹ F. In an example, 100 pounds of starch, 1 pound of sodium nitrate, 500 pounds of sulphite cellulose liquor of 30‹ BÚ., and 400 pounds of oil residuum form the binder, 4 to 6 per cent by weight of the coal used being employed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the use of furfurol instead of sulphite cellulose. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
