Abstract
990,386. Tar macadem plant. STRABA HANDELS A.G. Jan. 25, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2917/62. Heading E1T. [Also in Divisions Bl and B2] In the mixing of finely divided solids with a bituminous binder as to make fuel briquettes or paving materials, bitumen and water under pressure are mixed in a mixing nozzle and sprayed on a cloud of the solid particles. The water may be superheated to 170C. and the bitumen supplied at the same temperature, or the bitumen may be at 200-220C. and the water at 95C., whereby the water is superheated in the nozzle and is converted into steam and water at 100C. on discharge. The apparatus may consist of a container 21 with rotary discharge door 22, mixing paddles 23 on counter-rotating shafts 20, and nozzles 1 for discharging the atomized binder on to the floating cloud of aggregate 18. The mixing nozzles have a body 1 with an inlet 17 for bitumen which passes by the check valve 8, bore 13 and passage 14 to an annular duct 12, whence it is conveyed by two grooves 15 to the discharge orifice 3; the grooves 15 are tangential to produce a rotating jet. Water is supplied by the inlet 10 to the annular duct 11 and thence by passages as at 16 to mix with the bitumen in the grooves 15. Specification 891,731 is referred to.
