Abstract

791.554. Mixing apparatus. BRITISH ARTIFICIAL RESIN CO., Ltd. Feb. 16, 1956 [Feb. 17, 1955], No. 4754/55. Class 86 A mixing apparatus for, for example, coating cellulosic particles such as wood chips with a thermosetting resin or other adhesive binder comprises a mixing chamber 1 which has an inlet 2 for the chips at one end and an outlet 6 at the other and is fitted with an eccentric shaft 16 adapted to be rapidly rotated and upon which is mounted a plurality of axiallyspaced blades or vanes 15. The wood chips 3 are supplied to the chamber 1 in the form of a curtain 4 from, say, a band conveyer 5, and, simultaneously, the binder is sprayed at 12 against the curtain by atomizer nozzles 11 fitted in the end wall 9 of the chamber, the relative dispositions of the nozzles 11, blades 15 and walls of the chamber being such that the spray 12 does not contact said blades or walls. The blades 15 are so shaped and disposed as to throw up the already sprayed chips into a space 14 which is disposed immediately behind the curtain 4 and through which a part 13 of the spray 12 not entrained by the curtain, is projected; they are also preferably adapted to impart to the chips a movement towards the outlet 6. The chamber inlet 2 and nozzles 11 may be located about the vertical centre of the chamber 1 or, alternatively, offset. Fig. 3, to the side at which the blades 15 are rising as indicated by the arrow 19, and a rotary valve 20 of known type Fig. 4, with compartments 23, may be fitted within the inlet 2. Small quantities of liquid additives such as wax emulsion or molten wax, may be sprayed into the chamber 1 through one or more of the nozzles 11 simultaneously with the resin solution supplied by the other nozzles. The walls of the mixing chamber are preferably coated with an adhesionresisting substance such as polytetrafluorethylene. The apparatus may form part of the plant described in Specification 665,276 [Group VIII] for the continuous production of wallboard and like laminar products.
