Abstract

685,043. Extruding pipes &c. from fibrous pitch compositions. BITUMEX, Ltd. June 8, 1950 [March 8, 1949], No. 6274/49. Classes 70 and 87 (ii). Pipes and other articles are made by extruding a heated plastic binder composed of a thermo-softening plastic material comprising a mixture of pitch and crude tar acid in admixture with non-comminuted fibrous material. A mixture of pitch, crude tar acids with or without the addition of bitumen may be used as binder and the filler may consist of cotton fibre. From a hopper 1 the mixture is fed by a screw 3 along a chamber 2 having oil-filled heating cavities 4. It is then extruded through a die comprising an oil-cooled outer part 5 and a hollow mandrel 10 held in position by a spider 7. The mandrel is filled with oil which is supplied to the mixture through passages 11 in the spider 7. Semi-annular cutting knives 13 are operated by levers 14. The mixture 'may comprise, by weight 57 per cent pitch, 15 per cent tar acid, 8 per cent bitumen, 20 per cent fibre.
