Abstract
Electric insulating material comprises a mixture of polystyrene, rubber-like material, and between 5 and 20 per cent of solid polymers of ethylene. By rubber-like material is meant unvulcanized natural rubber, crepe rubber, hydrogenated natural rubber, cyclised rubber, synthetic rubber made by the polymerization or interpolymerization of hydrocarbons such as butadiene containing conjugated double bonds, and those linear substantially saturated hydrocarbon polymers which are similar in mechanical properties to raw or unvulcanized rubber, an example being polyisobutylene. The addition of the solid polymers of ethylene to insulating material containing both polystyrene and one or more of the rubber-like materials facilitates the extrusion of the mixture. In examples, insulating materials comprise mixtures of polystyrene, crepe rubber and solid polymers of ethylene either alone or together with (a) polyisobutylene and (b) polyisobutylene and paraffin wax.
