Abstract

Electric insulating material, particularly for insulated wire or cable, containing rubber and polystyrene, but not vulcanizing ingredients, is heated, without mechanical working such as milling, to at least 90 DEG C. for a time sufficient to cause substantial hardening of the material but insufficient to decompose it. The term "rubber" includes unvulcanized natural rubber, cyclised and synthetic rubber, as well as mixtures of these; and the term "synthetic rubber" includes polymers of butadiene or substituted butadiene, copolymers of butadiene and styrene, copolymers of an olefine and diolefine and linear substantially saturated hydrocarbon polymers, e.g. polyisobutylene. In examples, the treatment is described of compositions comprising polystyrene, crepe rubber, polyisobutylene and polyethylene alone, or paraffin wax together with (a) polyethylene, (b) talc or (c) zinc oxide. In another example, the processing of a mixture of a copolymer of butadiene and styrene, polystyrene, polyisobutylene, polyethylene and paraffin wax is described.
