Abstract

An electrically conductive rubber composition capable of being shaped and vulcanized is prepared by mixing a rubber gum stock such as natural rubber, polymerized chloroprene, polyisoprene, or copolymers of butadiene 1.3 with acrylonitrile, styrene or isobutylene, with vulcanizing agents, adding thereto a rubber solvent, such as gasoline, benzene, toluene or ethyl methyl ketone, sufficient to yield a solid mixture containing 20 to 55 per cent of solvent, and mixing therewith conductive carbon black and more of the same solvent to obtain a mixture containing 20 to 55 per cent of solvent and from 5 to 35 per cent of carbon black. The carbon black and the additional solvent may be added together either intermittently or continuously or they may be added alternately. The compositions may include pigments, antioxidants, vulcanizing agents and accelerators, and may be used as impregnants for woven fabrics, spread into thin sheets, or thinned by the addition of more solvent to form thin cements capable of application by dipping, brushing or spraying, these products being dried after fabrication and vulcanized by heating.
