Abstract
Synthetic rubbers are cured in the presence of an aromatic dinitroso compound having the general formula ON-Ar-NO wherein Ar is an arylene radical or substitution product thereof and the NO groups are attached in the 1 : 4 positions. The preferred compounds are p - dinitrosobenzene, p - dinitrosotoluene, p - dinitrosoxylene, p - dinitrosocymene and 1 : 4-dinitroso-naphthalene; from 1 to 10 parts of these compounds may be added to 100 parts of the rubber. The dinitroso compound may in part be replaced by a mixture such as p-dinitrobenzene and litharge which will form p-dinitrosobenzene in situ. The synthetic rubbers may be polybutadiene, interpolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or styrene and interpolymers, made for example by the methods described in Specification 565,974 from an iso-olefin such as iso-butylene with a diolefin or poly olefin having 4-12 carbon atoms such as butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 2-methyl hexadiene-1 : 5, myrcene or hexatriene. Carbon black, zinc oxide and stearic acid may also be added.ALSO:Natural and synthetic rubbers are cured in the presence of an aromatic dinitroso compound having the general formula ON-Ar-NO wherein Ar is an arylene radical or substitution product thereof and the NO groups are attached in the 1 : 4 positions. The preferred compounds are p. dinitrosobenzene, p. dinitrosotoluene, p. dinitrosoxylene, p. dinitrosocymene and 1, 4 dinitrosonaphthalene; from 1 to 10 parts of these compounds may be added to 100 parts of the rubber. The dinitroso compound may in part be replaced by a mixture such as p. dinitrosobenzene and litharge which will form p. dinitrosobenzene in situ. The natural rubber may be para rubber caoutchouc or gutta percha and the p synthetic rubbers may be polybutadiene, interpolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile or styrene and interpolymers, made for example by the methods described in Specification 565,974, [Group IV], from an iso-olefin such as iso-butylene with a diolefin or polyolefin having 4 to 12 carbon atoms such as butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 2 methyl hexadiene-1 : 5, myrcene or hexatriene. Carbon black, zinc oxide and stearic acid may also be added.
