Abstract

An adhesive composition comprises in admixture in an organic solvent a copolymer of a major proportion of an iso-olefine and a minor proportion of a diolefine, an organic vulcanizing agent for said copolymer and an organic compound which readily liberates a halogen. The copolymer is preferably a copolymer of isobutylene with butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene-1,3 or pentadiene-1,3 as described in Specification 523,248. The preferred vulcanizing agent is p-benzoquinone dioxime, though any of the quinone-oximes, their metal salts, ethers or esters may be used. The halogen compound may be a N-chloro amide such as chlorobenzamide or a chlorinated hydantoin such as 1,3-dichloro-5, 5-dimethyl hydantoin added in an amount up to 2 parts per 100 of copolymer. The solvent may be an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon such as naphtha, together with a proportion of a nitroparaffin such as nitropropane. Fillers such as carbon black, whiting, clays or finely-divided hydrated calcium silicate and also zinc oxide and sulphur may also be added.ALSO:An adhesive composition comprises in admixture in an organic solvent a copolymer of a major proportion of a iso-olefine and a minor proportion of a diolefine, an organic vulcanizing agent for said copolymer and an organic compound which readily liberates a halogen. The copolymer is preferably a copolymer of isobutylene with butadiene, isoprene, 2, 3, dimethyl butadiene -1, 3 or pentadiene -1, 3 as described in Specification 523,248, [Group IV]. The preferred vulcanizing agent is p. benzoquinone dioxime though any of the quinone-oximes, their metal salts, ethers or esters may be used. The halogen compound may be an N-chloro amide such as chlorobenzamide or a chlorinated hydantoin such as 1, 3- dichloro -5, 5- dimethyl hydantoin added in an amount up to 2 parts per 100 of copolymer. The solvent may be an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon such as naphtha together with a proportion of a nitroparaffin such as nitropropane. Fillers such as carbon black, whiting, clays or finely divided hydrated calcium silicate and also zinc oxide and sulphur may also be added. The adhesive may be used to bond natural rubber or synthetic rubbers such as polychloroprene copolymers of butadiene with styrene, acrylonitrile and isoolefines either to themselves or to leather, metals or synthetic resins such as phenolic resins and urea-formaldehyde resins.
