Abstract

Surfaces are bonded together by adhesives containing rubber so as to give bonds having good resistance to oil and solvents by coating at least one of the surfaces with a composition containing natural rubber, or rubber-like substances, or reclaim sulphur in amount 7 to 50 per cent by weight of the rubber, an accelerator such as zinc isopropyl xanthate, which acts at ordinary temperatures and a solvent and allowing the solvent to evaporate to leave a sticky coating to which the second surface is applied. One or both surfaces are first formed with a coating of a non-rubbery material such as resin, casein or glue, mixed with rubber or a material of a rubbery nature; rubber isomers such as cyclised rubber may fulfil both functions. The adhesive may be a mixture of rubber, sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid and an anti-oxidant dissolved in trichlorethylene to which zinc isopropyl, xanthate is added or a mixture of rubber, bitumen, magnesium oxide and carbonate, lime, litharge, zinc oxide, carbon black and sulphur dissolved in petroleum spirit with addition of zinc isopropyl xanthate. The priming solution may be prepared from latex mixed with a stabilizing agent or latex vulcanized by being treated with casein-formaldehyde condensation product as described in Specification 405,296, but preferably using trisodium phosphate in place of triethanolamine and mixed with sulphur, zinc oxide, a stabilizing agent and sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate, the latex being mixed with casein dissolved in borax, phenol and water and with fish glue. Alternatively, the priming solution may be a solution of rubber cyclised by treatment with phenol parasulphonic acid or other sulphonic isomerising agent and dissolved in benzol.
