Abstract
Vulcanizable easily spreadable rubber compositions are made by mixing comminuted rubber with a rubber solvent preferably having rubber in solution, and mechanically working this viscous mixture with a lubricant such as soaps or alkaline casein solutions until it is converted into an easily spreadable condition. The rubber solvent preferably contains about equal amounts of pure rubber and rubber reclaim dissolved therein. When aqueous dispersions of lubricating agents are used the mechanical working is not carried to the extent that phase invertion results. In an example, 10 parts crumb rubber are mixed with 50 parts rubber compound solution, a small amount of an aqueous paste of ammonium oleate is now worked in. A suitable amount of zinc diethyldithiocarbamate in dispersion is added immediately before the mass is spread by the use of trowels wetted with soap solution on to a surface previously treated with an adhesive such as a rubber solution. Vulcanization is carried out by hot water or steam after the organic solvent has dried out. The composition is suitable for coating the inner surface of tanks &c.
