Abstract

Thermoplastic rubber, i.e. a rubber isomer obtained by chemical treatment of crude rubber, is used as an intermediate layer for bonding rubber, or rubberized fabric, to a metal surface. The cleaned metal is spread or sprayed with a cement containing thermoplastic rubber, which may contain a filler such as aluminium powder, clay carbon black, zinc oxide or fibrous materials such as ground leather, ground cotton, or asbestos. A second layer of a tyre-tread stock such as a composition of smoked sheet, aldol-a -naphthylamine, zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, carbon black, mercaptobenzothiazole and mineral rubber may be applied either as a solution in a solvent or as an aqueous dispersion. A final layer of soft rubber compounded with fillers or a rubberized fabric is applied. Turpentine may be added to the cements to increase the tackiness.
