Abstract

Rubber is compounded with a plastic obtained by the reaction of an olefine halogen addition compound and a soluble polysulphide, e.g. as described in Specification 302,270, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], and with sulphur in excess of that necessary to vulcanize the rubber content and the mass is vulcanized by heat. The use of the soft plastic having a high sulphur content is preferred. The total sulphur content is preferably above 50 per cent. Fillers, pigments, accelerators, &c., may be added. Numerous examples are given with widely different proportions; the following is typical:-24,7 per cent soft plastic, 24,7 per cent rubber, 24,7 per cent of sulphur, 24,7 per cent of zinc oxide, and 1,2 per cent pine tar, vulcanized for 80 minutes at 30 lbs. steam pressure.
