Abstract

Increased resistance to abrasion is obtained in rubber compositions by incorporating softeners in the rubber prior to the addition of reinforcing ingredients such as carbon black, zinc oxide, barytes. Vulcanizing agents, other compounding ingredients, additional softeners, may be incorporated subsequently. Preferably a master batch is compounded, containing for example 55 parts of rubber, 5 parts of pine tar, and 40 parts of gas black, the pine tar being mixed with the rubber before the gas black is milled in. For tread stock, this master batch is milled with other ingredients to give a compound consisting of 61,06 parts of rubber, 3,40 parts of zinc oxide, 26,42 parts of carbon black, 1,70 parts of sulphur, 2,48 parts of stearic acid, 3,52 parts of pine tar, 0,60 part of phenyl b -naphthylamine, and 0,82 part of mercaptobenzothiazole. Other softeners which may be employed in lieu of pine tar, are oxidized petroleum oils, and stearic acid.
