Abstract
544,757. Rubber compositions. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Feb. 3, 1941, No. 1375. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1940. [Class 70] [Also in Group XXXIV] Static electricity is discharged by imparting electrically conducting characteristics to a tyre without impairing the qualities of the tyre structure. For this purpose, use is made of a vulcanized cement containing acetylene carbon black to form a conducting path extending from the region of the tyre beads 3, 4 to the tread. The cement may be applied to the outside of the tyre casing to form a path 11, or to the inner wall to form a path 12, or between the carcase and the side walls and tread to form path 15. It may additionally be applied to the walls of the tread grooves 13, and the inner and outer coatings of cement may be joined by a layer of the cement applied to the tread splice, and in slits through the tread. One example of a cement is rubber 100 parts, acetylene black 60 parts, stearic acid 6 parts, pine tar 4 parts, zinc oxide 4 parts, accelerator 1 part, sulphur 3 parts, all by weight. These materials are milled together and formed into a liquid-like cement by treatment with benzene or petrol.
