Abstract

The air-retaining liner of a tubeless tyre is composed of a vulcanized mixture of 50-70 per cent by weight of polyisobutylene, having a molecular weight of at least 80,000 (but usually not exceeding 400,000) with correspondingly 50-30 per cent of either natural rubber or butadiene-styrene copolymer. A typical mix comprises 60 parts of polyisobutylene with 40 parts natural rubber and 45 parts carbon black, together with the usual compounding ingredients of zinc oxide, stearic acid, sulphur, mineral oil, benzothiazyl disulphide and tetramethylthiuram monosulphide. If GR-S rubber is substituted for natural rubber in such a mix, zinc laurate is added. The mixture is sheeted out to provide the liner stock which is built into the tyre to adhere to the natural or GR-S rubber coating of the innermost carcase ply, the tyre then being vulcanized with the liner in situ.
