Abstract

Crumb like or granular compositions consisting of rubber and granular, fibrous or divided materials are prepared by admixing flocculent precipitates of rubber containing aluminium silicate produced in situ with such materials, the amount of precipitate and the quantity of water being so regulated as to result in products of a crumb-like character. The granular, fibrous and divided materials include leather fibre, wood flour, cork dust, jute fibre, cotton flock, naturally short cellulose fibres and ground fibres. Softening and adhesive agents may be incorporated in the composition. The compositions so formed may be sheeted out as in the linoleum industry, together with, if desired, a fabric backing. Decorative effects may be produced by using differently coloured crumbs or by painting the surface of the finished article with paint or cellulose colours. The rubber dispersions include those of rubber, guttapercha, balata, coagulated rubber, vulcanized rubber, synthetic rubber, waste or reclaim, and may contain the usual compounding and vulcanizing ingredients. The precipitates are prepared by coagulation in the presence of a relatively large amount of water, such, e.g. that the dispersion contains not more than 10 gms. total solids per 100 ccs. In a detailed example, a flocculent precipitate containing rubber, sulphur, zinc oxide, accelerator aluminium silicate, and mineral oil precipitate containing mineral oil, sulphonated oil, and aluminium silicate, is admixed with cork dust, lithopone and iron oxide. The crumb is dried and sheeted. Specifications 219,635, 290,313, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], 373,222, 373,263, and 396,159 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of flocculent precipitates of rubber in which coagulation has been effected by metallic salts produced in situ, acids such as acetic acid, salts such as zinc sulphate and magnesium sulphate and refers to substances having a restraining effect on the coagulation such as caustic potash, casein, sodium aluminate, glue and gum acacia.
