Abstract

Rubber compositions containing granular, fibrous or divided materials such as leather fibre, asbestos fibre, wood pulp, wood flour, jute fibre, cotton flock, paper pulp, abrasives and cork are prepared by mixing these materials with granular precipitates composed of rubber and a filling material which has been precipitated in situ by the interaction of two water-soluble reagents. The admixture may be carried out by first preparing the granular precipitate, and then mixing this with a dispersion of the fibrous &c. materials, or the fibrous &c. dispersion may be mixed with the latex and one soluble reagent, and then the second reagent added to produce the coagulation of the rubber and the precipitation of the filler. Examples are given of both methods of procedure. Reagents of the first class are carbonates, sulphates, silicates of the alkali metals or of ammonium, which have normally no coagulating effects upon the rubber. Reagents of the second class are soluble salts of magnesium, aluminium, calcium, barium, zinc, or sodium silicate if a reagent of the first class is used such as to precipitate silicic acid. Mixtures of precipitates may be formed, and the reagents may be so chosen than only one soluble product results for two insoluble products. Protective colloids such as glue, gum acacia may be added. The dispersions may include as well as rubber, those of guttapercha, balata, and artificial dispersions of coagulated rubber, vulcanized rubber, synthetic rubber, waste or reclaim. Concentrates obtained as described in Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], may be used. The mixtures of rubber and filler are separated and consolidated by filtration. The shape of the finished article may be determined by the form of the filter surface.
