Abstract

Plastic compositions for forming floor coverings, road blocks, soles for footwear, and nonslip surfaces for brake-blocks, foot-pedal covers, mats, grips for handles, &c. consist of elongated wood particles having a length of 1/16 to 5/16 inch compounded with natural or synthetic rubber or compounds having rubber-like properties such as those produced from oil and sulphur. The products described in Specifications 451,442, 453,854, 456,359, [all in Group IV], 457,310; 461,632 and 461,635, [both in Group IV], may be used. Wood wool may be mixed with natural rubber and the mixture milled until the wood is reduced to particles of the desired length. The products are calendered or moulded and vulcanized under pressure. The wood particles may be treated preliminarily with a waterproofing agent such as casein. Fillers, ground waste rubber, glues, bitumens, gums, &c., may be added. A sheet of the composition may be united to a sheet of ordinary rubber flooring material by vulcanizing the two together under pressure. Specification 385,001 also is referred to.
