Abstract

A rubber composition of a mortar-like nature suitable for use as a building material, as a floor covering, for road-making or for soling shoes, comprises rubber latex, mixed with sand, relatively coarse, preferably with the addition of a small amount of cement. In examples sand which passes sieves of 10 and 30 mesh per linear cm. is used. Sulphur and the usual accelerating and p preserving agents are also added, vulcanization being effected by a hot smoothing iron. Alternatively vulcanized latex prepared by the Schidrowitz process may be used but it is stated that products so obtained have less strength than those obtained from unvulcanized latex. The preferred latex is concentrated and prepared according to Specification 219,635, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.]. If the above composition is to be used for road-making it is preferably applied to a rough concrete foundation and consolidated by rolling.
