Abstract

A composite rubber faced cement unit is obtained by preparing from a cement mix, a base of the desired form and shape, allowing the mix to set, heating it in air at a temperature between 90 DEG and 110 DEG C., preferably for 15 to 60 minutes, and then applying to at least one surface of the base a facing of vulcanizable rubber composition, the cement base or the rubber facing or both containing a sufficiency of sulphur or sulphur-containing compounds to form a stratum of hard rubber and in addition with the mineral components present form a polysulphide layer. The cement base may also comprise fibres such as wood flour, cocoanut fibre, sisal, jute-fibre, cotton fluff, or asbestos and they may be used in the natural form, woven or felted, and they may be waterproofed, e.g. with bitumen, molten asphalt, molten waxes, rubber latex or solution, or resin emulsion or solution, or treated with a metal salt. In the interface, silicate binders such as Portland cement, magnesite cement, litharge, red lead, tar or drying oils may be added. The cement layer may be reinforced with iron and may be treated on the back surface with bitumen, asphalt or rubber cement and the treated surface may then be sprayed with sand while still tacky. The rubber layer may be of soft or hard rubber and a preferred mix to produce the latter consists of rubber 30 parts, lime 30 parts, sulphur 40 parts. Specifications 303,400 and 325,302, [both in Class 70], are referred to.
