Abstract

A sulphide of iron is added to the bonding-material, e.g rubber, artificial resin, or a vitrified composition, of an abrasive article such as a grinding-wheel. Either ferrous, ferric, or ferrosoferric sulphide, or the corresponding minerals triolite or pyrites may be used, in the proportion of 5-60 per cent and preferably 10-35 per cent by volume of the bond. The iron sulphide may be used in addition to such agents as cryolite. According to examples, abrasive grains, such as fused alumina or silicon carbide, are wetted with furfural and mixed with "A" stage phenol-formaldehyde resin, a hardening-agent such as hexamethylene tetramine, and iron sulphide, and the mixture is moulded and cured at 175 DEG C.; aniline-formaldehyde may be used in place of phenol-formaldehyde, in which case a mixture of aniline-formaldehyde powder, abrasive and iron sulphide may be pressed in a hot press; a vitrified bonded wheel is impregnated with a suspension of iron sulphide in phenol-formaldehyde resin and heated to set the resin.ALSO:A sulphide of iron is added to the bonding-material, e.g rubber, artificial resin, or a vitrified composition, of an abrasive article such as a grinding-wheel.
