Abstract

Wood shavings are incorporated in a rubber compound (made either from crude or crepe rubber or latex) and the product is sheeted in calender rolls or extruded to form blocks, slabs, or sheets for road paving, floor covering, &c. For 80 parts of rubber compound 120 parts of shavings are used in the case of paving or flooring blocks, and 40 parts of shavings in the case of thin flexible floor coverings. The shavings may be waterproofed before use. Colouring substances may be added to the mix and striated effects are obtainable by calendering. Several sheets may be superimposed and cut transversely into slabs. According to the two earliest Provisional Specifications the rubber is used only in the form of vulcanized or unvulcanized latex and the shavings may be replaced by wood meal, sawdust or ground mineral substances.
