Abstract

In a method of manufacturing a covering for floors, walls, &c., tesser of non-plastic material are assembled adjacent one another on plastic raw rubber or other vulcanizable material, and pressed into the latter so as to force it to flow between the edges of adjacent tesser , the vulcanizable material being then vulcanized, cured or matured so as to secure the tesser together. The rubber or other material may be carried on the backs of the individual tesser before the latter are assembled. The tesser may be made of vulcanized rubber, cured linoleum, wood veneer, stone, or earthenware. When tesser of wood veneer are to be used, a sheet of veneer is pressed on to a sheet of raw rubber in a cold press. The combined sheet is then cut up to form tesser , for instance by means of dies. The tesser are then assembled to form a pattern, and pressed and vulcanized in a vulcanizing press. A polish may be imparted to the wood surface by coating it with wax before pressing. In place of raw rubber, synthetic rubber, rubber substitute, glue rendered insoluble in water, or uncured linoleum may be used, and instead of sheet rubber, rubber solution may be applied to the wood. The assembled sheet is preferably afterwards mounted on a canvas or felt backing.
