[Class 17 (ii).] In the manufacture of shoe uppers of canvas partly covered with rubber, a piece of canvas from which the shoe upper is to be formed and an unvulcanized rubber sheet, preferably not cut out to the shape required, are placed flat one upon the other and inserted between an abutment surface and a pressing mould having blunt raised edge members which follow the contours of the free convas areas of the finished upper. The surfaces are pressed into contact under the application of heat so that the blunt edges close the pressing mould and the rubber, rendered plastic by the heat, is forced into the meshes of the fabric. As shown, applied to the manufacture of an upper of a sports shoe, having rubber-free parts h, i, j, Fig. 1, a sheet of un-vulcanized rubber 2 is placed on a mould plate 9 shaped as in Fig. 2, and a sheet of canvas is placed over the rubber. A plane pressing plate is pressed on the rubber with a pressure of 35-40 kilogrammes per square centimetre of the tool surface, under a temperature of 30-40‹ C. The pressing mould comprises a plate 9 of the shape of the rubber covering with raised edge members 10, 11, 12, 13 surrounding the rim. Parts of the rim may serve as knives and may be grooved, as shown in Fig. 2, to produce fluted rims on the upper. Parts of the rim may be sunk where it is desired not to press on the upper, e.g. at the parts 14 to form strengthening ribs. Specification 397,283 is referred to.
